5 Tips to Exercise While Traveling

I used to put a lot of pressure on myself to exercise while I was traveling, and now I’ve hit a stride that feels more achievable when I travel.  As someone who feels better on days I’ve moved, I’ve found a healthy balance of exercising and staying present during my trips. Here are my 5 top tips to exercise while traveling.

#1 Work with your travel plans, not against them. If you’re visiting somewhere in the beautiful outdoors, don’t plan to workout in your hotel gym.  Enjoy your vacation AND move by taking advantage of the outdoor activities around you.

#2 Plan ahead, research what’s available.  Before I travel, I check out what hiking trails, snorkel spots, or unique activities there are in the area.  Knowing what’s there before I go helps me.

#3 It’s okay to use your trip as rest days.  Our bodies actually need recovery, so if you train pretty regularly when at home, consider giving your body a break.  Taking a few weeks off from intense exercise like running or weight lifting throughout the year can actually leave you feeling better and stronger.

#4 Pack multi purpose clothing!  My favorite travel clothes are items that can go from a meeting to a yoga class in a snap.  Athleta is one of my favorite brands that makes office appropriate clothing you can sweat in.  A hydration pack like Camelbak or Patagonia doubles as a backpack and a water bottle while hiking. This way I’m ready for anything, and I can pack less.

#5 Measure your movement in joy, not in calories.  If you’re busy walking through museums, jumping through waves, or climbing mountains in the jungle, you’ll be so lost in delight you won’t even realize how hard you worked until you hit your Airbnb bed.  Try not to keep checking whether you hit your steps or calorie goals though, because you might miss the best moments of your trip.
