Movement Is My Secret Weapon Against the Seasonal Blues
The change of seasons always impacts my mood. I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression over a decade ago, and I know I have to take more care to manage it as the days grow shorter and darker. Over the years, I’ve learned that movement is my secret weapon. It doesn’t need to be long, intense, or perfect—just consistent. Here are a few ways I keep myself moving when the seasons shift, and how you can too.
Schedule Ahead
If it’s not on my calendar, it’s less likely to happen. I plan my workouts at the start of the week and, during the fall and winter months, I also book more group classes. This gives me accountability, but it also adds a social element that helps me get out of the house and connect with others.
👉 Action Step: Put at least one workout in your calendar for this week, even if it’s just 10 minutes. Bonus: sign up for a class you’ve been curious about.
Embrace the Elements
When the rain comes, I try to see it as an opportunity. Waterfalls and streams that are dried up most of the year come alive after a good storm. I save my favorite California trails with waterfalls and streams for this time of year. Instead of resisting the weather, I lean into it.
👉 Action Step: Check your local trails or parks and make a rainy-day plan. A little mud never hurt anyone! I use the AllTrails app for better navigating.
Fresh Air = Better Sleep
I love the sunshine, but fresh air helps me even when it’s cloudy or raining. A short walk outside improves my mood and sets me up for better sleep. I’ve invested in better cold weather clothing so that I can always stay comfortable, no matter the temperature.
👉 Action Step: Commit to a 10-minute walk outside this week, no matter the weather. Notice how you feel afterward.
Seasonal Fitness Fashion
I think workout clothes should be just as fun as the rest of our closet! I keep things lighthearted by wearing seasonal workout clothes—Halloween-themed spandex in October, and red-and-green combos when the holidays roll around. It’s fun, and it reminds me that fitness can bring joy, not just discipline.
👉 Action Step: Add one playful or seasonal piece to your workout outfit this month. Think of it as dressing up to brighten your mood. Constantly Varied Gear and GRRRL Clothing come out with fantastic holiday workout gear EVERY year.
Seasonal changes can be tough. If you’re feeling lower energy, you’re not failing—it’s normal. Small steps, playful touches, and a little planning can make a big difference in your mood and your movement. Give yourself grace, and remember: fitness isn’t about perfection. It’s about finding what keeps you feeling good, body and mind, through every season.
